Sala Rekalde presents an exhibition by painter Joseba Eskubi (Bilbao, 1967), bringing together recently produced works in small format grouped together under the title of Insomnia. They are all direct interventions upon reproductions of classic paintings that the artist distorts through the introduction of breaks, trickles and creases.

Insomnia constitutes a laboratory in which the evocative possibilities of image are tested; by painting upon other paintings correspondences and dialogues are established between the present and the past. These collages will soon be published in a book by the Belleza Infinita publishing house.

Joseba Eskubi works with acrylic paint directly onto pages from art books; the idea is that the support medium responds to a swift unmediated intervention, stimulated by an initial drive rich in nuances and registers. All these works display a savour for gesture and an emphasis on matter. The brushstrokes stir up, break into and saturate the space.

THE ARTIST

Joseba Eskubi (Bilbao 1967) studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of the Basque Country, where he has worked as a painting teacher since 1998. He has held several individual and collective shows, and his work is currently being exhibited at the Alegría gallery in Barcelona and Wolfsen gallery in Aalborg, Denmark. In the early 1990s he became known via La Fundición in Bilbao, after which he regularly put on shows in the same city at the Aula de Cultura BBK (1994), and in different galleries including Bilkin (2002) and Epelde & Mardaras (2008). In 2005 he exhibited individually for the first time in Madrid, at the Muelle 27 gallery, and later at the Jamete gallery in Cuenca, in 2010.
