SILVIA OLABARRÍA
Todos Nosotros
23 July - 15 September 2013

Sala Rekalde presents the exhibition of Silvia Olabarría (Bilbao, 1974) as part of the program barriek 2013 that will show the work of a selection of the artists that held Bizkaia Provincial Council Artistic Creation Grants.

The work offered by Silvia Olabarría forms part of a series comprising paintings and collages which the artist began at the end of 2010.

The titles of the works and that of the series (Todos Nosotros) were taken from loose phrases from Raymond Carver’s poetry, and others that, although not actually by this author, certainly could be in terms of their everyday feel and stylistic similarity – figures of speech such as “Don’t even lift a finger” or “It’s a relief”. The artist chose them, she says, “because I’m linguistically drawn towards this style and also because of the ambiguity produced through their being expressions everyone uses, making them kind of familiar and unclear at the same time, as they don’t explain anything about the work. I think the titles are in the same vein as the works”.

In this series Silvia Olabarría works directly with photographic images: “tearing them, joining them, and using their textures (stains on walls and floors or on clothes...) which point again to the surplus, to voids, remains in the blank spaces I leave behind”. For the artist: “They are to do with dissection, making and unmaking space, penetrating it and opening new rifts”.
