ELECTRIFIED 02 - HACKING PUBLIC SPACE

03.04... 13.06.2010

Electrified is a collaboration between the S.M.A.K. and Vooruit Arts Centre and concentrates on the interface between visual art and media art. The thread in this second edition is the public space, and in particular how artists formulate their actions in the public space and how they make the spectator, willingly or not, a part of their work.

Historically speaking there are several actions in visual art which could be described as flashmob actions even before the term was invented. These flashmob activists in the field of visual art – in the 70s and late 90s especially there are numerous examples to be found – forced their way into the public space (usually unannounced) or simply hacked it, with surprising, temporary, interactive artistic actions. The aim here was to create an effect which the spectator would experience as ‘alienating’ and so stimulate him to more social and critical reflection.

The same applies to the hacktivists who were more specifically active within media art. They too used the public space – in this case the Internet - in a temporary and surprising manner to stimulate the spectator/user to more social and critical reflection. Both flashmobs and hacktivists belonged to ‘fringe’ movements active within the visual and media arts respectively.

In the meantime the idea of ‘public space’ is constantly changing and a broad discourse has developed within contemporary art, both online and offline. Here artists do interventions to formally express their vision and to make an artistic statement.

The Electrified II/Hacking Public Space exhibition/installation will disclose several flashmob actions in visual art and hacktivist actions in media art in a documentary section. Furthermore, twenty international artists will be invited to present work on this theme, both in the real/virtual public space and in the museum. Some of the actions will develop during the course of the exhibition period and gradually be reflected in the museum. Electrified II will also include several lectures that will be held in Vooruit and in the S.M.A.K.
