Santa Monica Museum of Art presents the first museum survey in the United States to explore the extraordinary fifty-year career of Portuguese architect Alvaro Joaquim de Meio Siza Vieira, one of the pre-eminent architects in the world. Through drawings, models, and photographs, the exhibition will feature a selection of Siza’s vast body of work - including private residences, office buildings, public housing, restaurants, cathedrals, and museums. Siza’s attention to spatial relationships, sensitivity to material and texture, precision of scale and use of light as an expressive and active element transform his buildings into remarkable embodiments of grace and beauty. Awarded the highest honors in his profession, including the Pritzker Prize, Siza also teaches at the Oporto School of Architecture in Portugal. This exhibition will include documentation of two proposals that Siza designed for Los Angeles - the Getty Villa in Malibu and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.
