When calling oneself a painter, one has to bear the burden of the conventions which have accumulated in many years of art history. Dieter Ravyts choses not to disregard this ballast, but instead to question concepts like the artistic nature of paint, the self-manufacture of materials and the role of digital print. This research takes many different forms: hand painted posters, a seemingly scientific classification of laquerdrops and specially designed paint containers for home-mixed oil paint. Thanks to Ravyts’ sleek designs and sharp observations of the medium, he brings this deep-seated matter in a very contemporary context.
