Für Gordon Matta-Clark sollte der Film zunächst nur dokumentarische Zwecke erfüllen. Doch schnell übertrug Matta-Clark seine Fragen, die er in seinen Interventionen an die Architektur als städtischen, sozialen und politischen Ort stellte, in die Sprache des Films, mit der er oft in Zusammenarbeit mit Künstlerfreunden frei, und durch keine formale Ausbildung als Filmemacher gehemmt, spielt.
For Gordon Matta-Clark film started out as an instrument to document his performances. But very quickly the moving image became for him a tool of transformation of his investigations into architecture as an urban, social and political space. In this process, the artist, often in collaboration with artist friends, develops an unusual cinematic language as he plays freely with the medium, uninhibited by any formal training in filmmaking.
