Willem de Rooij: Root
14 Sep - 28 Oct 2023
Galerie Thomas Schulte is pleased to announce Willem de Rooij’s installation "Root", opening on 14 September, on the occasion of Berlin Art Week 2023.
Willem de Rooij investigates the production, contextualization and interpretation of images through a variety of media. Appropriations and collaborations inform his method, facilitating research in art history and ethnography. De Rooij tutors at the Städelschule in Frankfurt and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, and is co-founder and director of BPA// Berlin program for artists.
Investigating notions of identity and nationalism, "Root" confronts a 17th century painting on loan from the Stadtmuseum Berlin with 34 variations made by De Rooij.
Parallel to De Rooij's works, in the main Space of the gallery, a painting exhibition by Juan Uslé will be on view.
