The New World is a complete body of work produced by Mona Marzouk from 2004-2006, which includes "The Morphologist and the Architect”, "Helmets", "Black Gold Odyssey", and "'The New World".
"The Morphologist and the Architect” 2003-2004, was a series of acrylic on canvas paintings that explore the possibilities of an imagined interface between mythology, the animal kingdom and man-made structures (architecture).
"Helmets", 2005, was a series of wall paintings that probed into the history of the helmet as a structure with its many different manifestations in the battlefields of war and sports, while making an attempt to link it to the world of creatures other than man.
"Black Gold Odyssey", 2006, was a mural project that attempted to visually recreate the links and missing ties between oil as a natural product, oil as an industry and nature on the whole by fusing elements related to the oil industry with characteristics that refer to living beings.
"The New World" mural will borrow some of the elements from the series' described above and introduce them into a new domain, the domain of the Flag, aiming to ask questions such as how are flags constructed? How do they relate to the "real world" and how does one identify with the symbology behind the structure of flags.
Mona Marzouk (b. 1968), Lives and Works in Alexandria (EG). After finishing her art studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf, Germany, in 1996, Marzouk returned to her home town of Alexandria , Egypt , to launch her professional career in painting and sculpture. Marzouk's earlier work was largely an attempt to deconstruct the history of architecture and rebuild it using notions relating to Post-Colonial and Post-Modernist theories. Recently, Marzouk has moved away from a complete focus on architecture as a source of inspiration and has rearticulated the disparate cultural forces of Pop-Culture, Mythology, Design and Politics into her Murals, Paintings and Sculptures. Marzouk's recent solo projects include: The New World, Art in General, New York, 2006 and The Morphologist and the Architect, American University in Cairo (AUC), Exhibition Space, 2004. In 2005, Marzouk was one of the founding members of ACAF/ Alexandria Contemporary Arts Forum, the city's only artist-led space for visual culture.
