MIX MATCH MUSEUM
six collections, six museums, your exhibition!
10/10/2014 - 10/01/2015

Six museums allow visitors to make a choice from their collections
From 10 October 2014 six leading Dutch museums will hand over control. You will be able to browse through the collections of the Amsterdam Museum, the Groninger Museum, the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, Museum Boerhaave in Leiden, Museum TwentseWelle in Enschede and the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven on mixmatchmuseum.nl. Up to 10 January 2015 everyone can make a choice from 300 objects to make their own online exhibition. The only condition is that there must be a good story behind this choice. The most inspirational exhibition proposals will actually be carried out and can be seen in the participating museums in the 2015 Museum Week (18 - 24 April).

Online platform
The core of Mix Match Museum consists of an online platform where the 300 objects will be displayed from 10 October. The curators from the six museums have each chosen 50 items from their own collections, including objects or works of art which are rarely or never seen by the public. All the online exhibitions that are submitted can be viewed on the website and participants can discuss their selection(s) with museum staff via the blog.

Cross section
Mix Match Museum connects six museums which each in their own way reveal the Dutch wealth in the field of the visual arts, history, technology and heritage. Together they form a cross section of the Netherlands collection. The unique aspect of this cooperation is that it is not the museums themselves, but the visitors, who make the cross connections between the collections. Moreover, with this far-reaching form of public participation the visitor has a short spell at being an exhibition maker. He or she can experience the treasures which these museum professionals have under their care, and the dilemmas and restrictions they are confronted with on a daily basis when they are presenting these often vulnerable riches.

Mix Match Museum is an extension of the Expose project which the Kröller-Müller Museum introduced in 2010. Mix Match Museum also has the support of Stichting DOEN. With regard to the project, Stichting DOEN says: “Mix Match Museum is a unique cooperation between six leading Dutch museums. We consider it an example for the entire museum sector and hope other museums will take up this idea.”
