True Faith

Greenberg Van Doren Gallery is pleased to present True Faith, a summer group exhibition of thirteen New York-area artists, on view from June 28 – August 17, 2007. The exhibition is organized by artist Paul Brainard and will include paintings and works on paper.

In selecting artists for this show I chose work that encompasses visual ambiguity as the dominant aesthetic. The title ‘True Faith’ presupposes the viewer believes in the uncertainty of organic growth and the enigmatic openness this allows. I also wanted to concentrate on work that has a direct relationship to the touch of the hand. Throughout the process of painting and drawing many decisions are made that can lead the artist into new and unexpected territory. Much of the artwork allows a hybrid organic growth that complements disciplined thought and execution.

The work included in this show is diverse in technique, concept and imagery. This seemingly arbitrary imagery more accurately reflects existence in contemporary life. Ideas do not exist alone in a void, but randomly mingle with one another. Figurative work mixes with hard-edged abstraction, the surgically precise and scientific interact with the emotional and tumultuous. Expressive impasto brushwork splatters and drips in one painting to counter the cool precision and uniform surface in another. A dynamic dialogue exists between the artworks as they communicate with one another, allowing the viewer to ask many questions about the nature of art, and the many possibilities for artists to explore. A strong sense of intuitive and explorative intelligence percolates throughout the show. (Paul Brainard)
