Youngho Lee draws her inspiration from visual technologies, from cinema, film and social history and brings together elements from these various media in her work. In her immersive installations, she creates environments for experimental kinetic set-ups that provide visitors with novel experiences of time and space, alienation and familiarity. Above all, Lee’s work deals with the relativity of the progress of technology and humanity – from the perspective of a decidedly Eastern-oriented sensibility. While in the Eastern view technique and nature are equally integrated into a holistic ideal, technology and science are primarily regarded as means of man’s control of nature in the Western world.
In Clinamen – Matter Misprision, Lee investigates – through 16 mm film and video installation, and photography in how we understand the role of social media, technology, and data in our lives and how it allows our activities to be marked, follow and traced. The emergence of crowds and populism, manipulation of public opinion, state and corporate surveillance possibilities can play a role in limiting democracy. The possibility of a surveillance society can also manifest itself as a dysfunction of media change. Based on video work, the installation elements surrounding the film also play an quite important roll. Lee attempts at creating a disharmonious experience of sort by juxtaposing the act of immersing oneself in the film installation and realistic elements.
