D21 presents In the Event of Anmesia the City Will Recall, an almost classic videoperformance by the Australian artist Denis Beaubois. The video is facing the passers-by of Demmeringstrasse with a typical metropolitan city scene: grey office buildings, inhospitable places and a CCTV camera.
The carefully edited and elegantly structured video is documenting one out of twelve three-day-performances, which Denis Beaubois carried out in Sidney between 1996 and 1997. Owed to his education in the so called Bhuto-Performance technique enabling deliberate immobility, the artist is retorting the fixed gaze of the surveillance camera standing equally transfixed. People passing by as well as the invisible staff behind the camera lens is reacting puzzled.
