Creation and Power in Soviet Russia between 1917 and 1945

Through an exceptional series of paintings, drawings, sculptures, documentary materials, sound and audiovisual recordings and a musical survey, this exhibition examines the convergence of aesthetic speculations and political engagement in Soviet Russia during the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s, revealing some of the pivotal moments in that relationship. The show offers us insight into that complicated historical period, a time of tremendous creative energy and fierce intellectual debates as well as intense repression, by shining a spotlight on the best works of the leading figures of the day, most of whom are little known in Spain.
Curated by Rosa Ferré, this exhibition was organised to celebrate the Russia-Spain Dual Year with the special collaboration of the Russian Ministry of Culture and the Cité de la Musique in Paris. A total of 14 Russian state museums contributed to the project by loaning works from their collections, including the Tetraykov Gallery and the State Museum in St. Petersburg. Additional works were provided by the Latvian National Museum of Art, the Costakis Collection of the State Museum of Contemporary Art in Greece, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Collection in New York.
