REMAP 3 : ROB KENNEDY
12 September - 31 October 2011

For ReMap3 Transmission Gallery present Glasgow based artist Rob Kennedy, who is working in residence in the Karameikos area of Athens. The residency has developed out of discussions about the nature and context of ReMap, and ways in which to provide a space for a project that potentially triggers connections with people and spaces in and beyond the remit of the ReMap platform.

Through an open approach to doing and talking with others (artists as existing friends and collaborators, people working in Athens as artists, and others going about their business), Kennedy is working in a way that responds to the impromptu and often collaborative decisions that occur in a pragmatic approach to the present. This approach, which allows a space for encounter and reflection to feed back into the residency, mirrors Kennedy’s practice at large, where attention to the twists and turns, halts and procrastinations inherent become a part of the form the work takes.

Kennedy’s work whether in video, sculpture or sound questions the relationship between order and disorder and how they contaminate and recuperate each other. Having drawn on structures of television media representation to make video works that attempt to rationalise particular ideas of narrative, language and perception, it seems possible that this re-use and re-configuring of signs could also be put to use in a particular physical, political and social environment that is acutely aware of the mutability of translation, interpretation and understanding as creative tools of production.
Recent exhibitions, screenings include ‘(n)either use (n)or ornament’, Sunbear Gallery, Edinburgh, UK, Videonale, GOMA, Glasgow, UK, ‘Another Opening’, group show Nomi’s Kitchen, Glasgow, UK. Previous projects with Transmission gallery include, ‘Something is wrong here...’, solo exhibition, 2007, ‘Radiance Festival’, with Torsten Laushmann, Glasgow, 2006.
Kennedy’s residency period can be followed on his blog The Monkey or the Organ Grinder' - Dispatches from Kerameikos-Metaxourgeio.

“ReMap is an international contemporary art platform open and free to the public, which is held bi annually in the area of Kerameikos-Metaxourgeio in Athens, in tandem with the Athens Biennial. It is organized by ReMapKM, a not-for-profit organization”, established by the property developers Oliaros and Kerameikos Metaxourgeio Properties, in 2007.

ReMap takes place across a variety of locations mainly owned by Oliaros within the Kerameikos-Metaxourgeio area. Historically the area was a thriving working class neighbourhood with a mix of small businesses and elegant residential buildings. The physical fabric of the area has since deteriorated greatly and whilst still home to many traditional and immigrant Athenian businesses it also has a visibly thriving sex and drug related industry. “In an effort to draw positive attention to the area, ReMap provides a new way to access, interpret, share and experience contemporary art in Athens within a vibrant and challenging urban context, creating constructive discussions and dialogues. ReMapKM’s goal is to create an alternative platform for the production and experiencing of contemporary art within the urban context, to present an interactive environment within a cultural framework and to enhance Athens’s positioning in the international contemporary art scene.”
