Julian Irlinger: A Smile with One Tooth
19 Feb - 09 Apr 2022
Unknown Photographer, Corner Shop Window, Shopping Centre Kersten & Tuteur, from the book Berliner Architekturwelt, Ed. 16, 1914, p. 145
Julian Irlinger presents his second solo exhibition at Galerie Thomas Schulte with A Smile with One Tooth. The work is based on his correspondence with the owner and heiress of the monument-protected Tuteur House, the exhibition space and seat of the gallery, and her partner. The building is one of the few remaining commercial buildings of the Wilhelminian period on the once densely built Leipzigerstraße, which stands out because of its historically reconstructed architecture. Irlinger is familiar with the owners' perspective on the family history surrounding the building, which has been marked by expropriation, conversion, restitution, and reconstruction. For his work, he was granted access to artifacts and images from which he developed new photographs, prints, and objects that trace the construction of the building's historical narrative.
