Following its presentation at Limassol’s 50-1 Gallery, Drawing Stories travels to Athens and the Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Center.

The show–a curatorial project of the mis(s) group–presents works by twenty-six (26) artists from Greece and Cyprus under the title of Drawing Stories (2).

Drawing Stories is based on the notion of narrative, which is woven into the very fabric of this world and is perhaps one of the most ancient and most fundamental forms of communication.

The contemporary narrative implies a reciprocal relationship between those involved in it whether passively or actively. It is through this relationship that its boundaries and frames of reference are ultimately outlined. In art, narrative is likewise linked inseparably with the history of different cultures and the myths these have spun.

Contemporary artistic practice employing the medium of drawing has its own stories to tell, themselves part of that common repository of myths.

It is a process that invites the viewer to take a stand on the outcome of the creative act, at the same time that the ‘eye’ and all the mental and emotional responses it elicits determines the nature of the reciprocal relationship between them.

The artists in the exhibition mainly use pencil or ink to relate their own tales on paper or canvas. In some cases the canvas is replaced by a projection on a wall or a digital print.

If works featured in the exhibition are regarded as at once an extension of the world and an expression of particular artistic temperaments, one instantly becomes aware of the core imaginative nature of each work individually and, by extent, of the exhibition itself as a whole.
